What’s in a rod? That which we call a rod by any other type would probably not smell sweet, but would function as well.

We’re no experts in Shakespeare and his romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet (which is the inspiration for the first line, if you didn’t know), but we’re experts when it comes to vacuum bags, filter for vacuum and vacuum cleaner rods. And we can tell you that when it comes to the latter, the type you choose WILL make a difference.

What is a vacuum cleaner rod?

Also called the vacuum cleaner wand, it’s the pole that connects the vacuum machine to the nozzle. It’s what makes cleaning corners and hard-to-reach areas possible. Without this rod, you’d have to duck at every corner you want cleaned, bend at every spot that needs a good cleaning, and may even have to go on all fours when trying to reach not-so-accessible areas. You may even be doing the vacuuming mostly on your knees if it wasn’t for this rod.

There are two types of these, the telescopic rod and the extension rod. The telescopic vacuum cleaner rod is the more convenient one to use between the two. It can automatically be lengthened with just a push of a button or by clicking it into place. So while you’re doing a regular cleaning of your carpet for example, and you need to clean the spot underneath your furniture, you don’t have to move the furniture out of the way. You can just push the button to extend the rod, then you can easily reach and clean this area. This feature will also be good for cleaning the tops of curtains or ceiling corners. You won’t have to get a ladder just to reach these, you simply extend your telescopic rod to have that extra arm length and easily access these areas.

The extension rod serves the same purpose. It lets you access hard-to-access spots with an extra length of rod. But unlike the telescopic one, you need to do the extending part manually. This comes with two lengths that you would need to connect to make a complete rod.

How do you pick the right one?

If it’s your first time buying a vacuum, then you need to check the rod that comes with it. This is an important factor that you need to consider aside from checking the vacuum filter and bag. Check the package features, or better yet ask a vacuum cleaner expert to give you the rod details.

If you are looking for a replacement for your existing vacuum, first you need to know the make and model of your machine. Then you can search for rods that are compatible to this specific vacuum. There are also vacuum rods that work with any type of vacuum. If you’re getting these you need to take note of the measurements. Majority of cleaners are between 29-35mm. Take note though, that the width of the rod that is indicated refers to the inside measurement at the top end, not the outside. Make sure to take this into consideration.

This little piece of pole may often be overlooked as you focus on other vacuum features. But the vacuum cleaning rod CAN make a difference in your vacuum cleaning experience. Ensure you get the right one for your home.
