Even if you’re not a fan of housework (and how many people are really!) you can appreciate that tools need regular cleaning in order to maintain their condition – and a vacuum cleaner is no exception. Regular maintenance will help keep your vacuum cleaner in top shape, whether it’s a budget model or a top-of-the-line design. From unblocking the hose to cleaning the filters, here are a few tips to ensure your vacuum cleaner lasts as long as it should.

Unclogging and cleaning the hose

When doing any cleaning or maintenance of your vacuum, first make sure that it’s turned off and unplugged. Remove the hose from the body of the cleaner, and the floor tool from the wand. Feel along the length of the vacuum hose to see if you can locate a solid obstruction and then push a broom handle through the hose to push any objects, dust or dirt through. Be very careful not to jab too hard as you don’t want to tear the hose. You might also try bending a wire coat hanger and using the hook to grab any objects inside.

Vacuum cleaner cleaning tipsEmptying dust bags

If the vacuum cleaner isn’t performing well and there is nothing stuck in the hose, then it may be that your dust bag is too full. If you vacuum once a week, the bag should ideally be changed at least once a month, or when it reaches half full. Simply press the button on the barrel to release the door, remove the bag and insert a fresh one. On bagless models, press the button to release the canister and empty it over the bin. The transparent canisters on many bagless models make it very easy to see exactly when it needs to be emptied.

Cleaning filters

Vacuum filters remove dust, mites and allergens from your carpet. On some vacuums, the filters are designed to last the life of the cleaner. Check your vacuum manual so that you know what sort of filters you have. Other filters need regular cleaning and it’s a good idea to do this when you change the bag. Generally they can be easily removed and cleaned by gently tapping them over a bin, or in some cases can be washed under running water. Leave in a sunny spot to dry, and make sure they are fully dry before placing back in the machine.

Remembering brushes

If your vacuum cleaner uses a powerhead or turbo brush, remember to also clean the roller brush once a month or so. Simply pull away any dust, fluff, hair or threads of material with your fingers or use a comb or some scissors.

Other tips - making the most of attachments

It’s amazing the number of people that buy a vacuum cleaner with multiple attachments, never to use the tools. The attachments are designed to care for specific surfaces or areas, such as upholstery, curtains and floor edges.

Always read the manual so that you know how to use each tool. It will help you look after your floor and other areas, and help make the job of cleaning that much easier.
