Electrolux Ultra Active ZUA3860P Review - A technicians perspective
Like most Electrolux machines the general build quality is very high and has obviously been well designed. I guess writing this from a technicians perspective means I am going to be commenting on the issues rather than the benefits. I have also done a review from a users perspective for more of the plusses.
Here is a link to the user review.
The first thing I notice with these machines is that if they need to be repaired then it is very likely that the machine will get marked they have a lot of concealed screws under the power and cord retract pedals and under the digital display. I am a really experienced repairer and still make minor marks where a screwdriver needs to be inserted to pop out covers. I really don't like this as it must be something that the customer notices after a repair and makes the repairer (and the vacuum) look bad. I could be on my own here but I would rather more accessible screws that mean scratch free repairs. The other thing related to the screws is that when reassembling it is very fiddly to have everything aligned properly and can take quite a bit of concentration to get it spot on perfect.
The other significant thing in terms of design issues is that the connection in the powerhead is simply too flimsy where the power travels though the powerhead neck. I am sure that this is something Electrolux will correct in future production runs. In the mean time I have made a video showing how to repair the powerhead if it stops working due to the wiring issue (click here for the repair video) . Hopefully I will save a few people from buying a new powerhead as long as they are competant with a soldering iron.
The next couple if issues are mainly due to users ignoring basic maintenance.
I have done many repairs where the fault was that the machine is turning off after a 15 minutes of vacuuming. This is normally due to really blocked filters, mostly the foam filter in the dust bin. These are super easy to clean so there is no excuse, all it takes is a rinse in water and leaving it to dry before using again. If you vacuum every day then you will need to buy a filter so you have a spare. The problem extends further into the vacuum if it running it with blocked filters. Because of the reduced airflow and increased dust passing through the motor the rear hepa filter will wear out very quickly. This is a washable filter but in my experience washing is a waste of time as it never gets 100% clean. You are far better off cleaning the front foam filter regularly so the rear gets dirty far slower. If the rear filter is obviously blocked or worse split please buy a new HEPA filter. The other problem is that with blocked filters comes reduced airflow which will result in an increase in motor temperature. I have seen quite a few machines needing new motors in the warranty period normally the machine is quite dirty so I have to assume if the machine was properly looked after it is very unlikely to fail.
My score for repair difficulty is 7/10 (Difficult for DIY)
My score for construction and quality also 7/10 (Good machine but not Electrolux's best)
I guess all thing taken into consideration this is a pretty good machine. I dont like it to work on but if it is properly maintained it is far less likely to need repair.
