Technicians review of the Volta Vortex Gen 3 U4015
Ok so I am reviewing this as Smart Alec the vacuum technician.
What we have is a relatively compact vacuum cleaner in a pretty stylish bluey purple colour. Not that it's important but I actually happen to like the appearance of this machine.
The included accessories are as follows
- Vacuum - Volta Vortex U4015 Gen 3
- Telescopic tube
- Dual purpose floor nozzle
- upholstery nozzle
- crevice nozzle
- Turbo head
- Standard combination floor head
- Hard floor tool
I guess my first reaction is that you do get quite a few accessories for the $229 rrp. The quality of the parts is good but not great, which is to be expected for the price point. I have stripped one of these down and internally they are very simple but quite robust. The motor would be acceptable in most brands up to about a $300 vacuum in my opinion. The switch in the Volta Vortex Gen 3 is the same as many more expensive brands and the cord retract which is often a weak point in inexpensive machines is actually really good.
I would expect this to be a fine vacuum for a small apartment or flat for 1 - 2 people living there. I am thinking that if it was longer than a 10 minute job to clean your house this would be too small. The suction with a new filter is excellent and the dirt pickup really good. Looking at the general build quality of the machine and the tools I would expect to get about 3 years of usage in a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. If something was going to break it would be the hose or the combination floor head. Warranty will cover it for 2 years and after that it might be worth looking at replacement due to expected wear and tear overall.
Having seen a few of these machines in for a repair or service I can tell you the weak point is in the filtration system. In a nutshell there is a very large reliance on the user cleaning, or replacing the filter system very regularly. As a guide I would say that the vacuum filter should be cleaned every second time you vacuum and replaced every tenth time.
If the machine is not actually maintained you will suffer from suction loss and overheating. While the machine has a heat based overload on the motor if it is used for say 8 minutes at a time with a blocked filter the motor will get hot and wear quickly but maybe not hot enough to turn off completely. This will result in a short motor life and early replacement. If you are not inclined to spend time maintaining or replacing the Volta Vortex Filter then I would suggest looking at another machine.
Overall really good value for money especially if you can pick one up for less than $200. Don't expect this to be a vacuum for a full family or large house but otherwise a quality piece of gear for a small home.
